Criminals who use fake or stolen identity data...
are committing identity fraud.
They steal other people’s names to buy online...
to borrow money...
or open a phone account.
Identity fraud can have dramatic consequences.
You may be left to foot the bill, or be accused of fraud yourself.
Criminals use many scams to get your details.
They may steal from your bag...
your phone...
or your computer...
or you may be tricked into sharing information by online adverts...
phishing emails...
or fake websites for rental accommodation for example.
They may persuade you over the phone, or even come to your home.
Some criminals get lucky and find your data when you share it voluntarily online.
Happily, there’s a lot you can do to stop thieves stealing your information.
The National Office for Identity Data (RvIG)...
has set up a central helpdesk for identity fraud (CMI).
CMI has some valuable tips to stop these thieves.
Be careful who you give your personal details to...
especially your bank card...
your log-in details and your ID.
Are you buying online, for example?
Never send a copy of your ID.
Is a copy of your ID required?
Then send it as safely as possible and use the special app: the KopieID app.
Always write the purpose and the date on the copy...
and delete any data that the receiver doesn’t need to know.
Watch out for phishing!
Criminals don’t just phish by e-mail.
They may use the phone, text messages, or WhatsApp.
If someone asks for your ID, bank or log-in details, watch out!
If in doubt, call the person or the organisation asking for your details.
Always install the latest updates and switch passwords.
Do you have trouble remembering them?
Use a password manager.
And make it harder for hackers...
by securing your online accounts with two-step verification.
Alongside a log-in name and password...
you get an extra code in a text message or via an authentication app.
Have you experienced identity fraud?
Report it to the police and call the CMI helpdesk.
They’ll advise and support you on how to stop abuse...
and how to fix the damage.
CMI can also liaise between the organisations involved...
if you can’t do that yourself.
Don’t make life easy for the criminals.
Stay vigilant.
